Has any one else taken BuSpar during pregnancy? If so, did it help or did it cause any problems?

Question: I'm in the third trimester of pregnancy and I have Bipolar disorder. I've made it all the way to 30 weeks without any episodes or the need to be medicated. Now I'm starting to feel a depressive episode coming on. My psychiatrist has prescribed BuSpar to help. I'm so reluctant to take anything during pregnancy and I'd hoped I could make it through without medication. No such luck, I guess. Any advice for me?

Answer: Buspar or Buspirone is an anti-anxiety drug, so I am not sure if he is of the opinion that your concern about having a possible bipolar episode is cause the anxiety. From a personal point of view, I was prescribed this drug and it did nothing for me at all. Now, it isn't right to try to make comparisons, I wasn't pregnant which is a big difference. Would you consider saying to your psychiatrist that you have the drug, but you don't want to take it at this moment because of your pregnancy, but if you feel the need to do so, you will immediately. That leaves you in control and doesn't upset him. The over-riding factor that may be in his mind is that you cannot afford to have an episode being so far into your pregnancy, but he should explain that openly and clearly' so you can judge if you want to take it now. Good luck with this and the "little one".

pregnancy and type 1 diabetes I need some help please?

Question: I have type 1 diabetes and I think I may be pregnant. Its like 99.9% chance that I am pregnant but I just want to know what I can do to keep my sleep4you.com/sleep.php/84/baby.html'>baby and me healthy throughout the 81/2 months?

Answer: Indeed, call your endocrinologist and OB immediately and let them know. Your endo will want you to get your blood sugars into very tight control if they aren't already. There are several online resources for those of us with type 1 and pregnancy. Check out the boards on diabeticmommy.com, the Oh Baby! thread on TuDiabetes.org, and the boards on diabetesforums.com devoted to type 1 and pregnancy. There are also two active Yahoo groups: Positive Diabetic Pregnancies and Diabetic Moms, that have good insight. I wrote "Balancing Pregnancy With Pre-Existing Diabetes: Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby" for women with type 1 or type 2 who wanted specific insight from other women who have lived with both diabetes and trying to get, and be, pregnant. I talked to more than 50 women with type 1 or type 2, as well as a dozen medical experts about every aspect of preconception, pregnancy, and new motherhood, as well as loss and infertility. I also blogged about my healthy pregnancy three years ago, and am blogging now about my second pregnancy, at Managing the Sweetness Within (www.thesweetnesswithin.blogspot.com). Good luck--it's a lot of work, but a healthy pregnancy with diabetes IS possible. Best, Lyrehca / Cheryl author of Balancing Pregnancy With Pre-Existing Diabetes: Healthy Mom, Healthy Baby
